Pictorial Maps

Click to get bigger view

OK, I told TF I'd see if I could show a pictorial map I made on here - so you can all see how I so can not draw! This is a map I drew for the main village in my fictional North Yorkshire Dale - Skirradale.

Needless to say (sigh) I can't make the pictures line up like they should.

Each house, shop or cottage industry has a number or name and also the names of the people living or working there.

That's fantastic and I love all the characters' names! Makes all the difference when you lay it all out visually doesn't it.

As for getting the photos in the right order, if you select 'right' 'left' or 'centre' that's where they'll stay. It you select 'none' you can move them around in blogger by copy and pasting them. That's the theory anyway:-)

Ah, thanks, Lane

I never thought of trying copy and paste!

Wow Pat, what dedication to the craft! I never think of actually doing pictures, what a good idea. I absolutely cannot draw though, oh well. DO you mind if I post a lonk on my blog to yours? F

That's why I do models, collages and picture maps, Fionnuala, cos I can't draw.

I'd love you to post a link to me on yours; I'll do the same here.
In reverse that is.

This is wonderful, Pat! You are so talented!! And what a great way of getting those creative writing juices flowing. :-)

Annie
I reckon most 8-10 year olds would make a better fist of the drawing. But, for me, doing maps or models really acts as a story generator because the characters so come to life when I give them a place to live and work.

Well I think they're brilliant! Perhaps I'm easily pleased - hee hee! Do you know, about six months ago I attempted a children's novel, which I still have. It's about a fantasy land. I think your idea of pictorial maps and models would work really well for it. Maybe I will dig it out and give it a re-vamp!

Sounds a good idea, Annie. Although I'm concentrating a bit on writing for women's magazines now, I can't stay away from writing children's books for long.

In fact... (grin) ... I've just had an email from an agent asking me to send her the ms for one. It's printing as I write this.
Haven't done a map or model for this one because the main character lives here in the house up the hill.

Hi Pat, Sorry just catching up on blog reading, been gardening. I love your models what a great visual map. TFX

Thanks, TF

They're a very poor relation to the art you do, though!

What wonderful drawings - I love them! I grew up in Scarborough, and can totally imagine there's a village called Skirradale. I like thinking up names. My fictional village (near Oxford) is called Bidwell - don't think I'm up to drawing it though :o)

(Thanks to Lane for that tip, by the way!)

Hi, Karen
I didn't actually draw much of it apart from the 'roads'. Nearly all the buildings are cut-outs and stuck-ons. You should do one for Bidwell (great name).

It is a good tip of Lane's. I did it the way she said on hubby's blog and it works!
