This is lovely news. I did wonder why you had not written on here for a long time. You must have been busy writing this novella. I have enjoyed all your stories in The People Friend magazine. The Broome Park are my favourite though.
I'm saving your lovely pocket novel until I have time to put my feet up and indulge myself. I've nominated you for a blog award, Pat. If you with to accept it, the details are over on my blog http://renageorge.com x
Rena, thank you for visiting and for buying "A Song on the Jukebox". I hope you enjoy it - I had fun writing it. Thanks, too, for the nomination. I'll reply to that when I can work out how to do the links. x
I'm a reader not a writer. I have been reading the Peoples Friend and the Specials for many years. I meet up with a group of friends aged 30 - 68 every two months and we often talk about magazines.
We all feel the standard of some of the stories mainly in the Special though sometimes in the weekly as well has been slipping recently. They have been bland, "so what?" endings and without feeling and depth. Also there has been a lack of stories from regular names that could be why the stories are not as they used to be. The long pull out stories have been good, though.
We hope to see a return of writers writing satisfying stories to the standard that the Special used to adhere to.
Dear Anonymous It's a shame you and your friends haven't been enjoying some of the stories as much as usual. People's Friend is one of the few magazines left that give newer writers a chance and I know they nurture and encourage them every step of the way. Personally, I think it's good to see new names alongside more familiar ones - it gives the readers variety and freshness and, besides, the writers who are more familiar to you were also new when they started out.
I'm sure some of the newer writers will soon become 'familiar' names to you writing stories you enjoy.
I had my first publication when I was eight – a silly rhyme in my school magazine. A few years later I started writing children’s books - from board books up to short novels for girls and boys aged 8 - 10. As well as my own titles, my published books include licensed character titles and are a mixture of story/activity books, Annuals, a Sylvanian Families video and series books under an ‘umbrella name’ (I wrote 8 Animal Ark books as Lucy Daniels).
Nowadays I write short fiction for women’s magazines and Pocket Novels – “family and friends” stories set in the 1950s and also contemporary romance. My six Pocket Novels are also published in large print books by Ulverscroft and there is a new one coming shortly.
Also coming shortly is a Collection of Broome Park Prefab Village stories.
I live in a farmhouse on a sheep farm with my husband, Peter. We’re owned by Tim and Ted, our 2 Rough Collies, visiting wildlife and the sheep who graze in the moorland meadows outside my study window. The farmhouse and the animals often appear in my stories.
While I write, Husband up the Hill scratch-builds Historic Racing Cars in miniature. On show here: BRM Mk2 and Maserati 1949 Click on the picture to see more scratch-built miniature historic racing cars from the Posner 1950s Collection
