Where it all Began...

When I think about it, my enjoyment of series of books and short story series began even before I could read. I’m sure I remember Mum or Dad reading me those little strip books about Mary Mouse by Enid Blyton. Then, when I could read I always wanted more books about the same place or the same character. Famous Five, Secret Seven and all the other Enid Blyton series. Malcolm Saville’s Jillies and Lone Piners series, The Chalet School and many more.

Then it was on to Agatha Christie, Patricia Wentworth, Barbara Taylor Bradford, D.E. Stevenson, and Rosamunde Pilcher to name but a few.

My Kindle downloads show how much I still love series of books, short stories and novellas because, since the advent of e-books, I’ve found many ‘newer’ authors who’ve become well-known for writing series: Emily Harvale, Holly Hepburn, Cathy Bramley, Holly Martin, Tilly Tennant, Jo Bartlett, Sharon Booth…the list goes on and on.

So, yes, my love of series began ‘way back when’ and I suppose it shouldn’t come as any surprise that the books, novellas and short stories I write the most of are…

Yes, they are series.

Do you like reading or writing series? What are some of your favourites?

I loved the Famous Five and Secret Seven books too, Pat. I enjoy reading series still and I am re-reading Bernard Cornwell's Last Kingdom series at the moment. I also love the Dr Siri books by Colin Cotterill. There is something special about familiar characters/settings - like revisiting old friends and seeing what they're up to. And of course, I love your prefab series xx

Lovely post, Pat. The Famous Five and Secret Seven were some of my favourite childhood books too. I used to enjoy reading series but now I read and write stand-alones. Love your prefab stories though. xx
